Sean's Notes

It's hard to believe that Blues Cures Studio Jam Volume 8 is the tenth CD release from Blues For A Cure and it's amazing to contemplate all of the incredible talent that has been a part of our collective effort to battle this terrible disease that seems to know no boundaries.  Blues For A Cure has joined with A Christmas To Cure Cancer in supporting The Heather Pick Music Program at The New OSU James Cancer Hospital in Columbus, Ohio and it's been inspirational to see this idea come to life in 2015 and to be a part of the healing process through the emotional power of music inside the hospital.

Our blues festival in Cadiz last year featured the increasingly popular Southern Hospitality and for the first time anywhere, a Southern Hospitality Trifecta, also featuring Damon Fowler, JP Soars and Victor Wainwright with their complete bands making for quite a live show and an amazing recording session! As if that weren't enough, Hadden Sayers, Billy The Kid and myself were in the mix as special guests with members of our own bands, Mark Frye and Jan Roll, joining in for an incredible collection of tunes.

With each Studio Jam release, the bar seems to move a little higher and this is no exception with more original tunes than ever before and stylistic diversity that you would expect from such a strong and varied lineup as we are fortunate to boast on this compilation.  As I was compiling the musician's dedications for this release, I was moved over and over again by how this dreaded disease touches all of our lives and we thank you for being a part of this battle to end cancer.

Dedications

“Considerate and generous club owners are few and far between and my friend John Hursey, who passed away in February following a brave battle with esophageal cancer, was one of those rare individuals that musicians truly looked forward to working for at his establishment, The Canal House in Tuscarawas, Ohio.  John was an exceptionally dedicated supporter of the blues scene who frequently hired touring artists on weekends and week nights alike, providing crucial routing dates for musicians on the road.

I know that John did not always come out in the black when he presented blues acts but he loved the music and was willing to work with artists in building an audience. John was also a dedicated BFAC volunteer, running the food concession at Harrison County Blues For A Cure, tirelessly working over the hot grill to keep everyone fed and doing so with a big smile.  Myself and many of the musicians on this recording have performed at The Canal House over the years feel a profound sense of sadness both professionally and personally as we express our love for John and our prayers for his family." – Sean Carney

John Hursey

"It is with a heavy heart that I dedicate my performance on this CD to my dear friend and mentor, Gary Chasin, owner of Uncle Sam's Pawn Shop in Columbus, Ohio, who passed away in late 2015. Gary was a dedicated sponsor of Blues For A Cure, as a cancer survivor himself, and a generous booster of the Columbus music community at large. Gary's rare and selfless generosity, and love of life and music will continue to shine bright and make Columbus a special place." - Sean Carney

Gary Chasin

“My dedication is to Heather Owens for her continued success in fighting breast cancer and her dedication to helping women see their beauty throughout recovery.” - Nick Black

“I would like to dedicate my performance to my father and for my girlfriend, to her Grandma May.” - Steve Laudicina

“I'd like to dedicate my contribution to the album to my brother and hyper-dimensional light, Ryan Walker. Also to Christina Whiteside, breast cancer survivor and all around badass human.” - Matt Walker

“I dedicate my performance to my grandparents William Martin and Ellen ‘Joy’ Dean, both taken too soon by cancer.” - Billy Dean

“I dedicate my performance to my dad Mike Headley, who got me playing music and who I lost to cancer in 2013 at the age of 58.” - Justin Headley

“I dedicate my performance to Craig Goodwin: friend, band mate and fellow blues aficionado. Gone too soon at 57 from pancreatic cancer.” - Hadden Sayers

“I would like to dedicate this to my mother. Connie Fowler Schweikert.  She passed last year from cancer.” - Damon Fowler

"I dedicate my contributions in memory of Tom "Hetch" Heichel.  A good friend, and great man, lost too soon to Pancreatic Cancer.  Also, in memory of John Hursey. A good friend, and supporter of local live music scene, especially the Blues.  John touched the lives of many, and will be sorely missed.” - Jan Roll

“My dedication is to my Dad, Nick Evanochko, lymphoma and leukemia survivor.” - Billy The Kid

“My dedication is for my beautiful, selfless, caring, wonderful sister, Kyla Mcardle, who has recently been diagnosed with breast cancer.” - J.P. Soars

"I dedicate my performance to my amazing Dad, Elkus Gasper, Liver Cancer survivor And to Our Brother David Shelley who we lost to Colon Cancer." - Charles Gasper

"Cancer does not cripple love or conquer the spirit. I dedicate my work on this album to all those who could not control the wind, but certainly adjusted their sails, showing all of us that toughness is in our soul, not in our muscles." - Victor Wainwright

"I would like to dedicate my work on this album to all the beautiful souls that are lost to cancer and to the families of those affected." - Terrence Grayson

"I dedicate my performance to our friend and band brother Craig Goodwin, who is always with us in musical spirit. His kindness, generosity and heartfelt music still live through those of us who experienced him. RIP Craig." - Mark Frye

"I would like to dedicate my performance to my Grandmother, Katherine Siciliano." - Chris Peet

“The efforts I added to this project are dedicated to the memory of my Aunt Diane.  She was a survivor of cancer for 12 years before cancer took her from us in Dec. 2015.  And to my dear friend Lisa, who is a cancer survivor two times over!” - Jenn Ocken
