Sean's Notes
“Music brings back the feeling of life when nothing else can.” - Dr. Oliver Sacks
“Blues is the healer.” - John Lee Hooker
We are very excited to present Blues Cures Volume 6, building upon a legacy of the battle against cancer through the healing power of music. Mark Puskarich, Steve Mack and I decided this release should support The Heather Pick Music Program at The Ohio State University James Hospital, introducing the technological infrastructure of a robust music program at the new cancer hospital accessible to all patients and families, in memory of our friends and real life heroes Heather Pick and Lorne VanFossen.
There’s an obvious nod to Albert Collins on this release with three tunes penned by or associated with the late great Texas born bluesman who lost his battle with brain cancer in 1993. Collins influenced a generation of blues musicians in the late ’60’s and his biting guitar sound had a profound impact on all of the guitarists you’ll hear on Blues Cures Volume 6.
This volume reintroduces several Blues For A Cure favorites beginning with International Blues Challenge champions and Albert King Best Guitarist award recipients J.P. Soars, this time with his band The Red Hots comprised of Chris Peet on drums and bassist Don Gottlieb, Jonn Del Toro Richardson and in 2015 Noah Wotherspoon joined the Best Guitarist fraternity and he and his band took second place at the IBC this year. As 2007 Albert King/IBC winner, I was lucky enough to be the guy to present Best Guitarist Award to Noah onstage at The Orpheum Theater in Memphis this past January. John Del Toro presented my award in 2007, and Jonn and I (along with BFAC alum Nick Schnebelen) presented J.P. with his award!
Ohio born guitarist Mark May is best known for his time as guitarist for Dickey Betts and he currently performs all over the country with The Mark May Band featuring The Soul Satyr Horns, with Dave Absalom on guitar, Tim Keefe on bass, Gary Jorgensen on drums, Ted Basinger on trombone, John Bonham on trumpet and Joe Reasoner on saxophones, heard in their entirety here on a smoking original jump tune and a slow burner with Noah and Mark offering a salute to The Master of the Telecaster himself.
UK born Cleveland transplant Steev Inglish and I go way back to the early ’90’s when I would sometimes sub as guitarist in The Houserockers and he remains a great friend and an amazing multi-instrumentalist heard here fronting an Elmore James inspired slide guitar tour de force and contributing some amazing harmonica as a sideman on several tracks.
I go even further back with Marion, Ohio native blues shouter “Silky” Ray Macklin, who fronted the earliest versions of my band Sean Carney & The Nite Owlz along with Christine Kittrell. “Silky” contributes an original tune and joins The Mark May Band and Noah for a funky tribute, once again, to Albert Collins.
While we’re going back, might as well go ALL the way back with my uncle Dave West drumming on two tracks here - he’s the guy who got me interested in the blues in the late ’80’s and eventually brought me in as guitarist in his band The Joint Rockers! Dayton based bassist Marty Romie has been a BFAC regular for several years and he was especially excited to play on a track with his old bandmate and friend Noah Wotherspoon.
I want to thank Mark Puskarich and Steve Mack and Cody Romshak for their work and dedication; I hope you enjoy listening as much as we enjoy making it all happen!

"I would like to dedicate my playing to my wife Maureen who is a breast cancer survivor." - John Bonham
"I'd like to dedicate mine to my Uncle Phil. He was the veritable intellectual of the family; he graduated from The University of Chicago in International Politics and ran for Congress. He also happened to be an extra in the original Blues Brothers movie. Diagnosed with melanoma, he passed away at 34. All things cool & charismatic, he is deeply missed. Thank you Sean for your vision & allowing me to be a part!" - Noah Wotherspoon
"I'd like to dedicate my work to my mom, Mary Absalom, who lost her battle to cancer 20 years ago this year." - Dave Absalom
"I'd like to dedicate my contribution to Texas Johnnie Brown, and to Jackie Gray, two amazing musicians from Houston. Jackie played drums in the house band at The Big Easy for several years till he succumbed to lung cancer, and TJB, well he was Texas Johnnie Brown. Also my dad Johnnie H. Richardson." - Jonn Richardson
"I dedicate this work in memory of my Father J.E. Roll, 1937-2010, who was diagnosed with bladder cancer. He fought a long and hard battle." - Jan Roll
"I would like to dedicate my efforts to my mom who never let me quit anything (especially music) and who never quit on me." - Ted Basinger
"Dedicated to Marilyn." - Steev Inglish
“The Mark May Band would like to dedicate our performance to our brave families, friends and fans who have lost loved ones to cancer, and to those who have fought and won the battle. Keep on fighting and keep on rockin' the blues!” - Mark May
“I dedicate my work to the researchers, doctors and caregivers who are at the forefront of the battle against cancer.” - Ray Macklin
“I dedicate my work on this CD to my step-father “Wild Bill” William Hinson, a United States Military veteran who served his country in two tours of duty in Vietnam and was a hero to my mother in her darkest hours as she successfully underwent a life-saving bone marrow transplant for Hodgkins Lymphoma at The OSU James Hospital. Bill lost his heartbreaking battle with Agent Orange related cancer in 2014 and rests at Dayton National Cemetery among those heroes who made the ultimate sacrifice to our country.” - Sean Carney
“I'd like to dedicate this to my good friend and fellow musician David Shelley. David was diagnosed with colon cancer in February of 2014 right after his trip to the IBC. He is fighting it and receiving treatment right now. My pray for him everyday that he beats it and comes back to the stage real soon.” - JP Soars
"My mom battled breast cancer in her late 70's and she is now 92. God bless you, Mom, I love you. I also dedicate my work on this CD to musician Dave Shelly. I was honored to be a part of Blues For A Cure." - "Cougar" - Don Gottlieb
“I dedicate my performance to the bravest (and coolest) woman I know. My Grandmother, Katherine Siciliano. She battles Cancer with courage and dignity and is one of my greatest inspirations.” – Chris Pete
