Sean's Notes

Welcome to Blues For A Cure’s 12th volume in our Studio Jam series!  This one is a gathering of BFAC all time favorites like Hank Williams, Jr. lead guitarist Bart Walker, Marietta College Music Therapy Program graduate and musical powerhouse Sadie Johnson, Pittsburgh’s reigning Blues Queen Miss Freddye, along with her great band, as well as new faces in the fold from Cleveland’s Blue Lunch, lending their little big band swing to the proceedings.

We embrace an increasingly diverse musical ideology in arriving at the material we decide to tackle in the studio for our annual day long marathon recording session at Tony’s Treasures Productions.  It’s my personal observation that all of the artists assembled here are so deeply blues-influenced that no matter how far a selection might venture from the blues form, the music here will touch your soul in a way that is unmistakably The Blues.

I’ve been honored to call Bart Walker a friend since watching him win The Albert King Award and place as an International Blues Challenge finalist at the historic Orpheum Theater.  It was an even bigger thrill to see him on stage backing Hank Williams II.  To get to work with Bart is a true privilege and I remain impressed that there’s zero ego in the man’s game - just a genuine love for the music and for what we are doing at Blues For A Cure.

Speaking of what we do at BFAC, we are so proud of Sadie Johnson’s very recent graduation and are so excited for her future!  We were also excited to welcome Sadie’s sisters Grace on baritone saxophone and Molly on drums.  What amazing talent and how fortunate we are to be able to share it with the world here.

Miss Freddye has quickly become a BFAC favorite with her big voice and warmth that reaches through the music to touch and inspire audiences everywhere.  We’re lucky that she’s also contributed an original song with her great band.

I’ve long been a sometimes member of Cleveland’s Blue Lunch for several years and a fan for even longer.  We’ve been trying for several years to welcome Blue Lunch to our annual festival event at Sally Buffalo Park in Cadiz and finally pulled it off with this release.

We hope you enjoy listening as much as we enjoyed making this music and thank you for supporting Blues For A Cure!

Dedications

“I’d like to dedicate my work on this recording to my dear friends and partners in rhythm and blues, Wendy DeWitt and Kirk Harwood.  I’m so happy to be able to write that The Queen Of Boogie Boogie has kicked cancer’s tail and her drumming husband Kirk Harwood was there for Wendy every day - indeed that rock from which she stood up to face and beat cancer.  With love, here’s to great things in store for Wendy & Kirk (who both appear on Blues Cures Volume 9).” – Sean Carney

"I'd like to dedicate this performance/CD creation to all of the kiddos out there struggling with this illness. Cancer has taken the lives of too many precious people, but I know through the use of music, we are able to enhance lives - even if they are at the end of their journey here on earth. To all of those kiddos fighting: you are my role models. Thank you for showing us what true perseverance, strength, and endurance is." – Sadie Johnson

“I dedicate this to my wife Ellen who, stricken with breast cancer, with a full-time job, a husband, a four-year-old and an eight-year-old, endured two rounds of chemotherapy and two rounds of radiation treatment, and is now, thankfully, a 25 year survivor. It was a difficult time for all of us, yet she soldiered on bravely and emerged out of the hell of cancer, a winner.” – Bob Frank

“I have been a nurse for 34 years, specializing in surgical oncology. As a breast cancer survivor, twice, I understand the emotional, physical, and spiritual toll cancer takes on a person. It does not matter what cancer, it is the word…’CANCER’ that turns one life upside down. As a musician, I can sing to give comfort, to take away that moment of worry, anger, and even denial. Music takes the spirit to another place. Feeling great, feeling free! Giving some mental comfort for a moment or two! That is why I love to sing for this project! I give back without a second thought!” – Miss Freddye Stover

“For eight years now I’ve been involved and close with kids who have had cancer. It’s been very hard to see kids who I have connected with pass, but makes me also very happy when someone survives!!! Ultimately I think the one person I’m going to dedicate my songs to is John Catt, he introduced my family and I to music therapy, which has really changed my life! He passed away four years ago (2017) from brain cancer. He always said I had a big heart and a smile that could make anyone’s day! So if it weren’t for him I wouldn’t be doing what I’m doing!” – Molly Johnson

“I had so much fun performing and recording this CD and hope that all the listeners enjoy it, too! I want to dedicate this performance to my kindergarten teacher Mrs. Scuffham. She was way more than just a teacher and welcomed my family with open arms. I wish she could be here to hear this herself. I know she would be very proud.” – Grace Johnson

“I'd like to dedicate my participation in this project to the, unfortunately, multiple people in my life who have succumbed to cancer, but also to those who are now living, thanks to research that has been aided by projects such as this. I would also like to thank Mark and Sean for all of their hard work over the years with BFAC, and for allowing Blue Lunch to be involved, demonstrating that great art can be made for an important cause.” – Pete London

“I lost my only sibling, my sister Ellen, to metastatic breast cancer eight years ago and saw the devastation the disease caused her and her family. Having read a comment by Jimmy Thackery from the previous Blues Cures 11 release, he is so right to direct our thoughts and gratitude to the health care providers and the invaluable work they do that we should never take for granted.” – Mike Sands

I dedicate my work on this CD to Deb and John Meister.  John was diagnosed with cancer in 2018 and was my dedication on Blues Cures 11.  He was successfully treated at The James. Almost a year later, his wife Deb, was diagnosed with cancer.  They were back at The James for her consultations and treatments. Deb has been doing well with all her treatments over the past two years.  Then just before submitting this CD for replication, John informed me that cancer has returned and appeared in another location in his body.  Surgery is upcoming, so I pray by the time this CD is released, John will have this episode behind him.  Stay well my friends. – Mark Puskarich
