Sean's Notes

Listening to Mark Puskarich’s final mixes of Blues Cures Volume Eleven, I’m struck by how these live-in-studio jams have evolved into something much more than just a “jam" over the last decade, it’s a showcase of world class Blues talent assembled to raise money to fight cancer with heartfelt performances of the highest caliber.  Jimmy Thackery, who returns for this volume, once described our concept as; “They lock us into the studio until we finish an album,” and in a way of speaking, he’s right, although he’d be the first to admit that folks are free to go when they please and he might even tell you that performers always look forward to returning for the next recording session.

Many of the performers on this volume have appeared on previous Blues Cures recordings beginning with two outstanding bandleaders and their bands who were both present on our second volume, J.P. Soars & The Red Hots and the aforementioned Jimmy Thackery & The Drivers.  On the topic of blues guitarists, you won’t find more seasoned pros than Thackery and Soars, but young Italian guitarist and BFAC regular Dany Franchi contributes his considerable talents to the mix here and aptly demonstrates why he’s one of the most exciting new names on the international blues scene and he’s caught the notice of heavyweights like Joe Bonamassa, Jimmie Vaughan and Derek Trucks. A particular highlight for me is the red hot pairing of Dany with Thackery on Franchi’s own, “Don’t Steal My Time” - I think it was a highlight for Jimmy as well!

Another returning favorite is Miss Freddye Stover and this time she brought her fabulous band from Pittsburgh and they’re in tremendous form on the New Orleans gem “Hitting On Nothing” as well as the Mike Sweeney penned “Same Ol’ Lies.”  Miss Freddye is as warm off stage as she is on stage and she’s become a Blues For A Cure favorite who truly connects with all ages and backgrounds and she takes the time to be personally exuberant with each and every fan.  One of the things I’ve always loved about the blues is the accessibility fans have to performers and Miss Freddye personifies that in a very special and unique way with gospel roots that truly pour God’s love into the music and into the hearts of the audience.

The Hoard and Jones Band is new to Blues Cures recordings but guitarist Roger Hoard is a time-tested professional guitarist having been house guitarist at Jamboree USA with the 11/70 Band, the largest Saturday night country music live broadcast in the world, based out of Wheeling, WV and second only to The Grand Ole Opry.  Roger’s guitar work has been praised by masters like Chet Atkins and Little Charlie Baty and he shows his bluesy side, joined by Dany Franchi, on the classic, “Route 66,” and the introspective, “Time For Me,” featuring Hoard on slide guitar and banjo.

I really enjoyed the opportunity to front a tune with Jimmy Thackery & The Drivers once again and we agreed that Ike Turner’s gem, “Much Later,” was a peppy number to record.  I was also excited to collaborate with J.P. Soars, Chris Peet and up and coming drummer Brandon Pettiford on Shuggie Otis’, “Me And My Woman,” a funky workout where Soars really shines with his unmistakable guitar work. Both Soars and Thackery contribute outstanding instrumentals allowing them to really step out and incorporate elements of surf, rock and jazz.  Perhaps the late Dick Dale was on J.P.’s mind as he rips into some stellar tremolo picking on, "Caravan”?

I’d like to acknowledge two friends, Natalie Walston Abbott and Austin Johnson, who were both real life heroes to loved ones recently lost to cancer.  We make this music for you.  Huge thanks also to Mark Puskarich, Cody Romshak and Lois Puskarich who provide the most incredible recording studio experience I’ve found!  Thanks to you for listening and supporting our efforts!

Dedications

“I’d like to dedicate my work on this recording to Charles “Charlie” Einhorn, who crossed the bridge on April 15, 2019. Charlie was not only a cancer survivor, but also a holocaust survivor who spent his youth fleeing from Belgium to Pau in the south of France to evade the Nazi’s during WWII.  Many people in Central Ohio know Charlie as a writer, photographer and as the ever eloquent emcee at Comfest and Hot Times, but I knew Charlie as a true friend, an artist and a man who cared deeply for his family and his community and who embodied peace and love every day.  Charlie loved the Blues and I know he would savor every note on this recording.  I will miss you Charlie and so will many, many others.” – Sean Carney

“We all have folks, friends and loved ones who have fought the fight with cancer. Too many have lost the fight.  I would dedicate the fine work of everyone involved in this project to the physicians, nurses, and hospital staff who fight the battle with everything they have and all the knowledge and power they possess.  These tireless soldiers of good never quit in spite of the odds. They get too little in the way of thanks. Thank you all!” – Jimmy Thackery

“I’d like to dedicate my work to my amazing sister Kyla Faith Mcardle who was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2016. She had to undergo a double mastectomy and is now in remission.” – JP Soars

“I would like to dedicate these songs to my Dad's younger Brother, my Uncle Dale Hoard who passed earlier this year and Eric Crozier who was a fellow guitar player and customer of CA House Music.  I first met Eric when he was an Assistant Engineer at WWVA. My Uncle Dale was a Country Music Fan and an early supporter of my musical career. He used to bring Bus Tours to Jamboree USA a couple of times a year and booked the 11/70 Band in Garrettsville, Ohio near where he lived. Also Larry Beile and I formed a band in Pittsburgh in the late '70s called Crackerjack.  Larry is one of the finest musicians I've ever worked with, a Classical Piano Major for Carnegie Tech (now Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh). He's in the battle right now and in my prayers.” – Roger Hoard

“I have journeyed in the fight for a Cure for cancer. Being the nurse, being the patient, being the caregiver because of cancer.  I dedicate this in the memories of my parents, my grandfather, my friends, and patients, who lost their battle to cancer. Its through the courage, the spirituality, and the love of people, all the while I do this.” – Miss Freddye Stover

"I'd like to dedicate my work on this project to my parents and to all those people who left us because cancer and to the ones who are still suffering and missing dear people that left us too early because this terrible reason." – Dany Franchi

“In my short time (63 yrs) on this earth I've seen way too many cancer victims succumb to this vicious and deadly disease, to be able to start naming names would be staggering ......... on that note: I'll say playing our music to benefit cancer victims is the least I can personally do.” – Tim ‘Mick’ McDermott

“I dedicate my performance to my father Stanford and sister Peg, both of whom passed at a young age from cancer.” – Buck Allemond

“I would like to dedicate my performance to my Grandpa, Tom, who passed away from lung cancer January 24, 2018.  Thank you Grandpa, you were one of my biggest fans.  I love you. And to a good family friend, Renee Lawshae, who lost her short battle with cancer in March of 2019.” – Brandon Pettiford

“I’d like to dedicate this to my sister, Candi, who faces a daily battle with cancer. Hope and prayers to all.” – George Sheppard

"I dedicate my efforts on this fine collaboration to my bandleader, singer, confidante and dear friend Miss Freddye, without whom I may never would have had such wonderful experiences. Live Long my Friend!” – Greg ‘Gman’ Casile

"I dedicate my performance to JP Muccio and Stuart Nicholson both of whom had a hand in altering my artistic path and whose lives were tragically cut short by cancer." – Bob Powers

I dedicate my work on this CD to a good friend John Meister.  He was diagnosed with cancer this past year.  They caught it early.  He chose to have his consultations and surgery at The James.  John came out a clear and clean winner and was all healed up in time to enjoy his first Buckeye Cruise For Cancer with his wife Deb.  Be well my friend. – Mark Puskarich

Thanks To

A very special thanks to all the artists on this recording who donated their time and efforts.  We had two amazing sessions.  One in June ‘18 after the 8th Annual BFAC Harrison County concert and one in March ‘19 as we didn’t want to miss having the full Hoard and Jones band contributing a couple tunes to our compilation.  These amazing artists are beautiful people, incredibly talented, and so much fun to record.  To Cody Romshak, my best friend and recording studio engineer, who has amazing passion and patience in the recording sessions.

To Steve Mack, an integral organizer of Blues For A Cure, supporter of A Christmas To Cure Cancer, great photographer and good friend.  A special thanks to Teri Pealer for being our annual onsite artist liaison, cook and autograph herder. To all who helped organize and pull off Blues For A Cure events in 2018: my wife Irina Puskarich, Claire Zehnal, Cindy Blake, Joe Blake, Scott Smalley, Laura Strickland, and Margarita Crow.  To my mom Lois Puskarich, who blankets Harrison County to make sure posters and flyers are distributed everywhere. To my sister Lisa, for proofing everything on a minute’s notice and catching all the small things.  Photographers Dusty Scott, Steve Mack, Kelly Thornton, Judy Puskarich and Mark Berger.

To my cousins Lori and Rich Milleson, for all their support of ACTCC and BFAC Harrison County.  To all the sponsors, especially MarkWest Energy Partners LP, Midwest Terminals of Toledo, Gulfport Energy, Milleson Insurance, Dan Jones of Harrison Community Hospital and Scott Porter of Sally Buffalo Park for support of BFAC Harrison County.  Cadiz Mayor Ken Zitko, Tammy Mattern and the Lincoln Inn and Ben St. John of Microtel for providing accommodations for the artists each year.

Don Sloan and WTOV9 Steubenville for all the PSA support.  Cindy Taylor from 106.3 The River for radio advertising and PSAs.  Matt Cooperrider and C.J. Ketchel for CD art layout, Mark Frizzell and Dave Marsh, of West-Camp Press, for making my small projects of big importance to your facility.  To the wonderful folks at 10TV: Angela An, Karina Nova and Mike Davis among others as well as Joel Riley of 610WTVN for all the Columbus support. We all work so very hard to help make an impact on cancer research and Keeping The Blues Alive. – Mark Puskarich
