Liner Notes

One of the things I love the most about the 2008 Blues For A Cure event program is so many generations were represented. We’re happy that theme continues on this Blues For A Cure studio recording with featured artists Henry Gray, Jonn Richardson and Trampled Under Foot.  This session took place on Sunday, December 14, following The Blues For A Cure Festival that raised $10,000 for the Stefanie Spielman Fund for Breast Cancer Research at the Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital (in memory of Heather Pick) and The American Cancer Society.

We decided we wanted this release to support our cancer charities and our favorite musical non-profit organization, The Blues Foundation.

My reasons for this are personal.  In the summer of 2007, I spent a week in Rochester Memorial Hospital as the victim of a brown recluse spider bite.  Sean Carney Band booking agent Jo-Ann Freda appealed to the Blues Foundation on my behalf, as just one in a sea of uninsured blues musicians. The Foundation, through their HART Fund (Handy Artists Relief Trust), contributed significantly toward my hospital bill.  The HART Fund and other programs such as the International Blues Challenge, The Blues Music Awards, Blues in the Schools and Blues Hall Of Fame, clearly illustrate The Blues Foundation is about supporting Blues artists and the future of this uniquely American art form.

Jonn, Nick and I endorse Category 5 Amplification. They were kind enough to provide guitar amplifiers for the event and this studio session, in addition to underwriting this release.

On this release, we wanted to emphasize The International Blues Challenge and Albert King Award Most Promising Guitarist winners Jonn Richardson (2005 with Diunna Greenleaf), Nick Schnebelen (2008) and myself (2007).  With that theme in mind, we also utilized the talents of Trampled Under Foot, Bill Stuve, Steve Gerard, “King Saxe” Gene Walker, Jim Godin and Brian Duress.

We were overjoyed when Henry Gray and Andy Cornett agreed to participate in this session.  Henry himself is a cancer survivor, and Andy lost both of his parents to cancer.  Henry is a major architect of the classic Chicago Blues sound that developed in the 1950s on the famed Chess Records label.  What an incredible honor to have the opportunity to record with Henry, along with my uncle David West who was my conduit to the Blues.

After performing at the BFAC concert with Hubert Sumlin and Henry Gray, followed by Trampled Under Foot, Jonn Richardson commented: “Henry and Hubert are our teachers, and it is so exciting they are sharing their music and encouraging us!”

Trampled Under Foot swept The 2008 IBC. There is no doubt these amazing young siblings are one of the most talented and exciting acts in the Blues today.  The energy they brought to the session with soulful vocals and a superb rhythm section proved to be so much more than a rock solid platform on which to feature the Albert King Award winners.

I can’t count the number of times during this marathon session “cold chills” went down my spine, as I was deeply moved by the soul and talent so openly given by my friends in the name of battling cancer and Keeping The Blues Alive.

I would like to dedicate my work on this CD to my mother, Mary Hinson, in her brave battle with Hodgkins Lymphoma and to the memories of Shirley Spencer, Cal Baldi and Miles Carney.

I would like to thank my business partner and best friend Eric Blume, Mark Puskarich, Mike Berichon, Dave Bush Guitar Works, Don Ritter & Category 5 Amplification, Andy Cornett, Dr. Paul McCarthy, Dr. Richard Cunningham, Page Stallings at Blue Mountain Artists, Hubert Sumlin, Toni Mammary, Steve McBride, Kevin Gregory, Sharyn Sollars, The Columbus Blues Alliance, Aaron Beck & The Columbus Dispatch, John Petric & The Other Paper, Ace In The Hole Music, Johnny Go’s House of Music, Brian Duress, Joe Whitmer, Jay Sieleman, The Blues Foundation, Optimum Plastics, Central City Recording Studio, Dusty & Val Scott, Noah Hunt, Scotty Bratcher, The Blindman’s Blues Forum & BluesWax. – Sean Carney

I have been asked if we are doing enough. Here is my answer: I am certain that at some moment, a brilliant doctor or research scientist will shout “AH-HAH” when the discovery is made…the secret to annihilating this dreaded and insidious disease called CANCER. My hope and vision is for when that moment occurs, there will be a Blues For A Cure dollar in the meter. We need that next dollar, and we are trying to raise it.

We have chosen to use the Blues as our means to this end. While we are running around raising money to fight cancer, we are also promoting a great American art form. This great American music genre, and the great and giving people who practice it, are perfect for this cause. Blues people care, they want to help, they will get involved. I am privileged and honored to be associated with Mark and Sean and to work with them on this project. I am humbled when the local blues community rallies around this cause, and when Blues greats and icons come and play at our event and donate their time and music for these wonderful CD’s. Thank you to all of the artists.

Thank you for buying this CD. Please consider coming to one of our shows.

"In honor of my best buddy Bob and Aunt Peggy who are fighting the fight. And to Uncle Sam and my sister Shelly...I love and miss you both so much." - Mike ‘Bear’ Berichon

"It magnifies my heart to be alive today and to be able to give back and help others. But more importantly, to have survived my bout with cancer and be back with a vengeance to help eradicate the disease that claimed so many of my friends and family. It's a cause I'll always hold near and dear. And how blessed I am to be able to do it all through my music! I had a wonderful time!"  -Hubert Sumlin

"The Blues For A Cure weekend 2008 has remained in the forefront of my thoughts for a number of reasons. Since being there, this terrible disease has claimed another family member, and we are struck again by the absolute necessity of finding a cure."

"I have talked with several of the artists who performed this year, and it is readily apparent that all were uplifted through our involvement.   For The National Debonaires, I can tell you that BFAC raised us to new heights.   We often talk about our Blues journey in terms of the power of our interpretations of this music to reach people, but we could not have anticipated the outpouring of love and kindness from being with the BFAC team in Columbus."

"Blues artists ask for nothing.  Most of us ply our craft day in and day out for small but dedicated audiences.  We scramble to make ends meet.  We ask ourselves why we carry on.  We look at the ever-shrinking numbers of forefathers such as Hubert Sumlin and question our own sustainability in this idiom.   Then we have an opportunity through BFAC to step outside ourselves to help others, and all of our questions are answered."

"You, Mark, Sean and the entire BFAC team have come up with something that is, in my view, seminal.  You have pitted the fiercely powerful idiom of the blues against a seemingly unstoppable killer.   The blues and its practitioners are relentless.  The music has been pronounced dead more times then can be counted, yet it rises each time with more strength and determination."

"It is clear to me that one day, one dollar will be the one that helps some individual make a breakthrough for a cure.  I am betting that dollar will come from individuals such as you who have the heart, the passion and the generosity to never give up; to be as relentless as the blues music we know and love."

"Thank you for the opportunity to be involved and we hope we are lucky enough to be asked to participate in 2009." - Steve Gerard & The National Debonaires

First, let me say thanks to all of the musicians on this record.  It was a healing and spiritual experience for me to see all of it come together and feel the positive energy in the room and in the studio.

The Category 5 amps used at the concert and the recording sessions were the Andrew model (which is the Albert King Award amp), the Allen model and the Tempest model.  These amps cover the spectrum of vintage American and British tones of the ‘50s through ‘80s.

It was exciting for us was having three Albert King Award winning artists playing together on the stage and studio.  Some real magic happened here. The fact that all three guitarists were playing Category 5 amps just was icing on the cake.  You will hear it soon enough.  Special thanks to Jonn Richardson, Sean Carney and Nick Schnebelen for their talent and support of Category 5 Amplification and to my partner and the technical wizard behind the amps, Steve Scott.  Enjoy these great tunes! - Don Ritter, Artist Relations, Category 5 Amplification
